What is Experiential Learning?

Experiential learning is an engaged learning process where students “learn by doing” and further reflect on the experience. Experiential learning activities can include, but are not limited to, hands-on laboratory experiments, internships, practicums, field exercises, study abroad, etc.

NCC’s Center for Career Development can support you in connecting to experiential learning opportunities. This includes an annual job shadow program, micro-internships, and job simulators. Check out more information below! In addition, NCC also provides campus clubs, Student Leadership Programming and Events, and a Student Senate through the Student Life & Leadership Development office.



Job simulators are a great way to test out a potential job. They’re free to do and will take just a few hours of your time. These brief experiences can allow you to explore multiple jobs or careers a single day! Job simulators are hypothetical projects – they will not have any direct impact on the company. Nonetheless, they are experiences you can add to your resume!

Job Simulator Guidebook

Micro-internships are defined as short-term, professional projects typically ranging from 10-40 in duration. These projects can be a stepping block into a traditional internship (ranging anywhere between 75-200 hours total). These projects are a great way to sharpen your skills, become more familiar with a work environment, and add a professional experience to your resume.

The Center for Career Development offers an annual job shadow program over the winter break. More information can be found on the Job Shadow Program for Students landing page. There, you will find important dates, FAQ’s about the program, and the link to the registration (if available).

Can’t job shadow over the winter? No program! The Center for Career Development can still connect you to job shadows even during the off season during the spring and summer.

First, you will be asked to complete an orientation that outlines professional expectations and begin preparing you for the day of the job shadow. Once that’s completed, our office will connect with our employer partners to see who is available to host.
