Job Shadow Program for Students

Job Shadow Opportunities at NCC

A job shadow is a 1-day experience designed to explore a specific career path and experience a typical day in the life of an employee or team. Job shadows can include a tour of the workplace, a discussion about job responsibilities, and the opportunity to watch and experience a day on the job.

A job shadow is valuable because it:

  • Provides the real-life experience needed to confirm or redirect your career path.
  • Demonstrates the skills necessary to excel in that field.
  • Provides valuable insight into the current trends and jargon of the industry.
  • Helps you start building your professional network.
  • Increases your self-confidence, professionalism, and communication skills.

Student Spotlight

"A valuable part of the job shadow was getting to see how important information in the business field is applied in real life. I also found that being able to talk with professionals about their experience was extremely valuable in showing me how I would fit into different roles."

Job Shadow FAQs

The program takes place over the winter break so that it does not conflict with NCC classes. Each job shadow is a 1-day experience during business days. It can be a full day (9am – 4pm) or a half day (9am – 1pm or 1pm – 5pm)

Job shadows will take place at the office or facility of the employer host. Employers are primarily located in the Lehigh Valley or Monroe County areas. Additional locations may vary. Company addresses are shared upon registering for the program in order to determine travel needs in advance.

Your participation in a job shadow does not guarantee any type of employment afterwards. However, it is a great way to expand your professional network which could lead to an opportunity.

In order to participate, simply complete the registration before the deadline. Late registrations will not be accepted. A resume is not required in order to participate in the job shadow program. However, some employers may request additional paperwork to be completed.

All participants are guaranteed a job shadow! We do our best to match students with their top preference, though we can’t guarantee you’ll get your first choice. The sooner you register, the higher likelihood you will be placed with your first choice – so don’t delay!

Yes! The registration will ask how many job shadows you are interested in participating. You can select one, two, or three. We will do our best to provide you the number of opportunities you request for; however, there are no guarantees.

No, students in the program are responsible for arranging their own transportation.

Once you submit your registration, the Careers office will follow up with next steps including a program overview, FAQ’s and information about the orientation. The orientation is mandatory, as it reviews information to prepare you for the day of the job shadow. Some best ways to prepare include creating a resume, gathering professional attire, researching the company, and developing questions for the employer host to answer.

We recommend you dress in business casual. We will go into this in greater detail during the orientation. Free professional clothing is available to you from the Center for Career Development's First Impressions Boutique. Email careers@northampton.edu to schedule an appointment to "shop"!

Only your name, NCC student e-mail, and major will be shared with the employer. No GPA or other protected information will be shared. Contact information is shared with the employer as they will connect with you prior to the day of the job shadow.

Some job shadows will require you to provide additional background checks or clearances. You will be notified of any additional requirements when you receive your placement information.

When you receive your job shadow placement and sign the agreement form, you are committed to attend on the date assigned to you. Cancelling or failing to show up is strongly frowned upon and could result in disqualification from future job shadow programs. For emergency situations, please notify our office as soon as possible.

Yes, you can participate again, but you will need to submit a new registration.

Yes! You are welcome to register to participate in the job shadow program. It is important to note employers may have limited availability. Therefore, opportunities are filled on a first come first served basis.

Only high school students who are enrolled at NCC are eligible to participate at this time. If you are currently a dual enrolled student at NCC, please keep in mind that you may have to miss a day of school to participate. You will need to arrange your own transportation to and from the job shadow. Additionally, not all hosts allow participants to be under the age of 18. This will be specified on the list of available job shadows at the time of registration.
